What is SYNMUN? The 4-Hour No-Prep Model UN Explained
SYNMUN — short for The Syndicate Model UN — is a four-hour, no-preparation Model UN conference. Delegates do not receive the agenda in advance. There are no position papers. There is no preparation phase. The room opens, the agenda drops, and you have four hours.
The Format
A SYNMUN committee runs as a single uninterrupted session. The executive board reveals the agenda at moderation. The first thirty minutes are reserved for unmoderated caucus — delegates orient themselves, form blocs, and identify positions. From minute thirty onward, formal procedure resumes and the committee runs to its terminal directive.
Why No Preparation?
Traditional MUN incentivises rote research. Delegates who memorise their country's foreign policy briefs win. SYNMUN tests something else entirely: situational reasoning, negotiation under genuine uncertainty, and the ability to construct a position from first principles in real time. It is closer to actual diplomacy than the prepared format will ever be.
Who Should Apply
- ▸Delegates with at least one prior MUN — the format punishes procedural illiteracy
- ▸Anyone who has won under the prepared format and wants to know if they can still win without it
- ▸Lawyers, debaters, and policy students looking for an honest stress test
