MUN Research Methodology — From Background Guide to Position
Most delegates research badly — they read the background guide, glance at Wikipedia, and call it preparation. Real research follows a different sequence.
Step 1 — The Background Guide
Read it once for orientation. Then read it again with a pen, marking every UN resolution, treaty, or document the EB cites. These are your source list.
Step 2 — Source Documents
Pull each cited document. Read the operative clauses. UN resolutions are short — most are under five pages. Reading them gives you specific clause language to cite in committee.
Step 3 — Country Position
Search "[your country] + [agenda topic] + statement" on the UN Digital Library. Your delegation has almost certainly made an official statement. Use it.
Step 4 — Recent News
Last 90 days only. The EB will inject contemporary developments into crisis updates. Knowing the news is the closest thing to seeing the future.
