Every Point and Motion in MUN — A Procedural Cheat Sheet
// THE SYNDICATE··8 min READCLEARANCE: PUBLIC
Procedural fluency separates the delegate who looks lost from the one who looks dangerous. Here is the full inventory.
Points
- ▸Point of order — to flag a procedural error by the chair
- ▸Point of inquiry — to ask the chair a procedural question
- ▸Point of personal privilege — when something affects your ability to participate (audibility, comfort)
- ▸Point of information — to question another delegate after their speech
Motions
- ▸Motion to open debate — start the session
- ▸Motion to set the agenda — when there are multiple agenda items
- ▸Motion for a moderated caucus — specify topic, total time, individual speaking time
- ▸Motion for an unmoderated caucus — specify total time
- ▸Motion to extend — extend a caucus already in progress
- ▸Motion to introduce a draft resolution — once you have requisite signatories
- ▸Motion to move into voting procedure — close debate, vote on resolutions
- ▸Motion to suspend debate — pause for a break
- ▸Motion to adjourn — end the conference
// USE WITH CAUTION
A point of order raised incorrectly makes you look procedurally illiterate. If you are not sure, do not raise it.
