Your First MUN — A Survival Guide

// THE SYNDICATE··8 min READCLEARANCE: PUBLIC

Your first MUN will be confusing, exhausting, and probably embarrassing. Everyone's was. Here is the survival manual.

Before You Arrive

  • Read the background guide twice.
  • Write a one-page position paper even if not required.
  • Memorise three procedural motions: moderated caucus, unmoderated caucus, suspension of debate.

What to Bring

  • Laptop or notebook
  • Two pens
  • Power bank
  • Water bottle
  • Snacks (committee meals are erratic)

In Committee

Speak in the first hour. Even if it's a 30-second statement of position. Delegates who don't speak in session one rarely speak in session two. Your first speech is the easiest one you will ever give — nobody expects much.

// GENUINE ADVICE
Do not panic when the procedural language confuses you. Watch the experienced delegates for one session. By session two, you'll have it.
